Jacob Jongert (1883-1942) is best known for his work for the Van Nelle factory. In the 1920s, companies employed for the first time advertising chefs who developed a corporate identity. Piet Zwart for NKF and later Bruynzeel. Huszar (for a short time) for Miss Blanche. Louis Kalff for Philips and Jacob (Jac.) Jongert for van Nelle. Jongert began under the influence of Richard Roland Holst and converted to modern design under the influence of Stijl. Here is shown a poster for Apricot Brandy, commissioned by the company wed. G. Christian Schaaf
Christiaan Schaaf (1890-1969) was a painter and poster designer who spent much of his life abroad, inter alia Madeira and Guyana. In 1920 he made a poster for H.S.M. for the The Hague-Twente connection via Amsterdam. The Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij is the first Dutch railway company. The first line went from Haarlem to Amsterdam and was opened in 1839. The poster was printed by Senefelder.
Chris Lebeau
Chris Lebeau (1878-1944) was a designer, painter, resistance fighter and anarchist. He was a versatile artist who designed designs for textiles and wallpaper and woodcuts, but he also painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits. During the war, he joined the resistance. He died in 1944 from exhaustion in Dachau concentration camp.
The poster was made in 1916 for a play entitled Agent 666. In a review in the Algemeen Handelsblad of May 20, 1916, it is stated that the play was performed by the theatre company De Haghe Spelers, in which Eduard Verkade is involved. This poster has probably been supplemented by theatres in the country with information about the performance by city.
Wilhelmina Drupsteen
Wilhelmina Drupsteen (1880-1966) is best known for her work for the women's movement. For example, she designed the poster for the exhibition “The Woman 1813-1913”, an initiative of feminists Rosa Manus and Mia Boissevain. Drupsteen was a multi-talent, she designed book bindings, etching and painting. She also made two children's books in Art Nouveau style. Saillant was her work for the Society for the improvement of women's clothing, which was committed to wearing reform dresses.
Anton Kurvers
Anton Kurvers (1889-1940) was a designer active in the field of street furniture. In addition, he designed three covers for Wendingen, a Dutch magazine of architecture. He designed posters for Royal PBNA in 1918 and 1920. The abbreviation stands for Polytechnisch Bureau Nederland Arnhem. The agency was founded in 1912 and provided (technical) written education. PBNA still exists as an examination office for safety and technology.
H.P. Berlage
Hendrik Petrus Berlage [1856-1934] is known as the architect of the Koopmansbeurs in Amsterdam and the Kunstmuseum in The Hague, Less well known is that he was a gifted illustrator. He also designed book bindings. Here is a poster of him from 1893 for the promotion of the fast connection from Hoek van Holland to Harwich.
